“How much will VAT registration cost me?” is one of the first questions new business owners in Dubai ask. The short answer is reassuring: the Federal Tax Authority (FTA) charges nothing to register for VAT. The real costs are the professional time needed to get the application right, and the penalties and back-dated VAT that follow if you register late or incorrectly.
This page explains exactly what you pay, what you get for it, and how to keep the total cost as low as possible.
Is There a Government Fee for VAT Registration?
No. VAT registration through EmaraTax, the FTA’s online portal, is free. There is no application fee, no certificate fee and no annual renewal fee for your Tax Registration Number (TRN).
So why do most businesses pay for VAT registration? Because an incomplete or inaccurate application is often sent back by the FTA, and every round of clarification adds days — sometimes pushing a business past its legal registration deadline.
Our VAT Registration Fee
| Service | What’s included | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Standard VAT registration | Eligibility check, document review, EmaraTax application, FTA follow-up until TRN | AED 420 |
| Voluntary VAT registration | Same as standard, plus expense-based threshold evidence | AED 420 |
| VAT group registration | Group eligibility review, representative member setup, group application | AED Custom Quote |
| Urgent registration | Priority preparation within 24 hours of receiving documents | AED 525 |
| Registration + first VAT return | Registration plus preparation and filing of your first quarterly return | AED 840 |
Fees are fixed and agreed in writing before we start. There are no hourly charges for FTA follow-up questions.
What the Fee Covers
1. Eligibility assessment
We confirm whether you must register (taxable supplies and imports above AED 375,000 in the last 12 months, or expected in the next 30 days) or may register voluntarily (above AED 187,500 in supplies or taxable expenses). We also check whether you should register as part of a VAT group.
2. Document preparation
We review your trade licence, Memorandum of Association, Emirates IDs, passports and proof of signatory authority, and prepare a signed turnover declaration with supporting evidence — the part of the application most often queried by the FTA.
3. Correct business activity mapping
Your activities on EmaraTax must match your trade licence. Mismatches are a common reason for rejection.
4. EmaraTax submission
We complete every section of the application — entity details, eligibility, banking, business relationships and customs details — and submit it on your behalf.
5. FTA clarification handling
If the FTA asks for more information, we respond quickly and keep the application moving until your TRN is issued.
6. Post-registration setup
We explain your filing periods, tax invoice requirements and first return deadline, so you are compliant from day one.
What Affects the Cost of VAT Registration?
Most businesses pay our standard fee. A higher fee may apply if:
- Your turnover records are incomplete and need to be rebuilt before a declaration can be signed. Our backlog accounting service handles this.
- You hold several trade licences or operate in more than one emirate.
- You are a non-resident business with no UAE establishment.
- You need a VAT group covering several related companies — see VAT group registration.
- You are already late and need a voluntary disclosure or penalty review at the same time.
The Hidden Costs of Registering Late
The cheapest VAT registration is the one done on time. Registering late can cost far more than any professional fee:
- AED 10,000 penalty for late registration — see VAT late registration penalty.
- Back-dated VAT on every taxable sale since the date you should have registered — usually VAT you never collected from customers.
- Late payment penalties on that back-dated VAT, which since 14 April 2026 accrue at an annualised rate of 14%.
For a business with AED 1 million in sales that registers six months late, the back-dated VAT alone can exceed AED 20,000 — before penalties.
Ongoing VAT Costs After Registration
Registration is a one-off cost, but VAT compliance is ongoing. After registration you will need:
- Quarterly VAT returns — see VAT return filing.
- Bookkeeping that records VAT correctly on every invoice — see bookkeeping services.
- E-invoicing readiness for B2B and B2G invoices from 2027 — see our e-invoicing readiness checklist.
Many clients choose a monthly package that includes registration, bookkeeping and VAT returns for one fixed price. Compare options on our accounting packages and pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. There is no renewal fee for a TRN. Your ongoing costs are for bookkeeping and filing VAT returns.
Once documents are ready, we usually submit within one to two working days. The FTA typically reviews applications within 20 business days.
We correct the issue and resubmit at no extra charge if the rejection relates to our preparation.
Our standard fee covers registration only. A combined registration and first-return package is available.
The fee is similar, but voluntary registration lets you recover input VAT on set-up costs, which often outweighs the cost.
