Salon & Beauty Accounting

Running a salon in Dubai means juggling bookings, staff, products and customers who pay in every way possible — card, cash, Apple Pay, Tabby, packages and gift vouchers. Behind the chair, the numbers get complicated fast. Prepaid packages create liabilities, retail products need stock control, stylists earn commissions, and VAT applies to almost everything you sell.

We provide accounting, VAT and corporate tax services for hair salons, nail bars, barbershops, spas, lash and brow studios, and aesthetic clinics across Dubai and the UAE.

Why Salon Accounting Needs a Specialist

General bookkeeping often misses the details that matter in beauty businesses:

  • Mixed revenue — services, retail product sales and packages each need separate tracking.
  • Prepaid packages and memberships — cash received today for treatments delivered over months.
  • Gift vouchers — VAT timing depends on the type of voucher.
  • Commission-based staff — stylists paid a percentage of their service revenue.
  • Chair or room rental — freelancers renting space instead of being employees.
  • Booking and payment platforms — Fresha, Booksy, Vagaro and similar apps deduct fees before paying out.
  • Product inventory — retail stock and professional-use stock that is consumed in treatments.

If these items are not recorded correctly, profit is overstated, VAT is wrong, and cash-flow surprises follow.

VAT for Salons and Beauty Businesses

Registration

A salon must register for VAT once taxable supplies exceed AED 375,000 in 12 months, or are expected to in the next 30 days. Most established salons cross this quickly. Our VAT registration service handles the application, and our step-by-step VAT registration guide explains the process.

VAT on services and products

Beauty services and retail products are standard-rated at 5%. Prices displayed to customers must include VAT.

Packages and memberships

When a customer pays in advance for a course of treatments, VAT is generally due when payment is received, not when each session is used. Your accounting must still spread the revenue over the treatments delivered, so the income statement shows the correct monthly profit.

Gift vouchers

UAE VAT rules treat vouchers differently depending on whether they can only be used for a specific service at a known VAT rate or can be redeemed more flexibly. The type of voucher affects when VAT is accounted for. We set up your POS so vouchers are recorded correctly from the start.

Tips

Tips that customers give voluntarily and that are passed in full to staff are generally outside the scope of VAT. Mandatory service charges are not tips and are subject to VAT.

Discounts and promotions

VAT is due on the price actually paid. Free treatments given away above certain values can count as deemed supplies, so promotional giveaways need to be tracked.

Our VAT return filing team prepares quarterly returns that reflect these salon-specific rules.

Staff, Commissions and Payroll

Staff costs are usually a salon’s biggest expense. We help you:

  • Calculate commissions from POS service data
  • Separate employees from freelance chair renters
  • Prepare payroll and WPS salary files
  • Accrue end-of-service gratuity correctly
  • Track visa and staff-related costs per employee

Chair rental income from freelancers is a taxable supply for VAT and must be recorded separately from service revenue.

POS and Booking System Reconciliation

Each month, we reconcile your booking and POS system to your bank account and card payouts. That means:

  1. Matching daily sales by payment method — card, cash, digital wallets and buy-now-pay-later.
  2. Recording platform fees and card processing charges.
  3. Tracking package and voucher balances still to be redeemed.
  4. Reconciling cash takings to bank deposits.
  5. Flagging unusual discounts or refunds.

The result is a clear monthly profit-and-loss you can trust, by branch if you have more than one.

Inventory for Salons

Retail products sold to customers and professional products used in treatments should be tracked separately. We help you record stock purchases, calculate product cost per service, and reduce wastage — often one of the quickest ways to improve a salon’s margins.

Corporate Tax for Salons

Every salon company must register for corporate tax. Many smaller salons with revenue of AED 3 million or less can elect Small Business Relief and pay no corporate tax for the period — but only if the return is filed on time and the business is not artificially split across licences. Owners with several branches under different licences should get advice first. See corporate tax for SMEs and our corporate tax return filing service.
